ROAMING IN MONGOLIA 2014

SEE ALL PICTURES

In June of 2014, work brought me to Mongolia and the Gobi Desert. This part of the world had always intrigued me and I was really curious to see the herders, their gers and the still traditional lifestyle that they lived.

However upon landing in Ulaanbaatar, it is quite obvious that the country is going through some major changes and seems to be westernizing. The city skyline was filled with brand new habitation complexes and dozen more ongoing projects. After 2 days in the traffic plague capital, it was time to hit the one and only road!

Most of the country is accessible using an intricate network of dirt tracks and GPS marked trails. Southern Mongolia is mostly considered to be part of the Gobi Desert and the scenery comprises rolling hills with or without low grass. Herders do still exist and still live a nomadic lifestyle, moving with the seasons and their cachemire goat herds. Besides solar panels, moving using trucks instead of camels and soccer t-shirt, life hasn’t changed much for them. The recent funding of Chinese cachemire by the government of China, the prices are hard to compete against and some of the nomades a forced to sell their herds and move to the crowded suburbs of Ulaanbaatar.
